Welcome to Cats Protection Welwyn Hatfield Branch

We’re here to support cats and kittens in Welwyn Hatfield covering postcodes: AL6, AL7, AL8, AL9. AL10.

Run by a small team of cat-loving volunteers, we’re dedicated to improving the lives of cats and kittens in Welwyn Hatfield, working to find loving new homes for local cats in our care, offering support with neutering, and lost and found cats, as well as general education and awareness within the Welwyn Hatfield area.

Cats Protection Welwyn Hatfield branch does not have a central adoption centre. All the cats in our care are looked after by a team of volunteer fosterers in their own homes or purpose-built pens in gardens until we find new homes for them.

Our volunteers foster cats, raise funds and generally keep the branch going, enabling us to take unwanted cats and kittens into care year in year out. We always welcome new volunteers, no matter how little time you have. We are looking for support with transport and microchip checking stray cats.

Cat adoption in Welwyn Hatfield

During the process of adopting a cat from us, we’ll consider everything from your potential cat’s personality and how they will fit with your lifestyle, to your home environment – creating the perfect match for both cat and owner and the start of a wonderful feline friendship. Some cats are a great fit if you have children and/or other pets. Other cats need lots of space so if you live in a rural environment it would be ideal for them. If you live in a flat or close to a busy road, you may be able to adopt a cat who needs an indoor-only home for a number of reasons.

Our adoption fee is £100 per adult cat and £120 per kitten, which includes 4 weeks free PetPlan Insurance.  Before leaving our care, all of our cats and kittens will have been checked thoroughly by a vet for any health issues, given flea and worm treatments, blood tested for FIV/FeLV (feline aids and leukaemia virus), vaccinated, microchipped and, if old enough, neutered. For any kittens adopted from us that are not yet neutered, we issue full cost neutering vouchers. Any known medical issues will be discussed during the Home Visit. We do not make any profit from the re-homing our cats/kittens, as our fee rarely covers the costs of these treatments/procedures and food and litter whilst they are in our care. 

Other points to note

We do not have a central adoption centre – all cats available for adoption are kept at private addresses by volunteer fosterers. 

Adopting a kitten
Please note that we do not normally rehome kittens to families with children under 5 years old. Where possible our kittens are homed in pairs, with one of their litter mates. Also, when adopting a kitten from Cats Protection you must agree to get the kitten neutered at around 4 months of age. If you or your family are out at work all day, we would prefer you to adopt an adult cat or pair of cats.

Busy roads & Railways
It's our policy not to place our cats or kittens in homes which are on or close to busy/main roads, bus routes or railways.
Note: From PetPlan advice on roaming - A cautious cat may only ever venture 10 metres from their cat flap, but we found the average roaming distance is just 40-200 metres from home.

In this situation, we would advise you to have an indoor only cat. Alternatively, you might consider cat-proofing your garden.

Holidays
If you are going on holiday within the next 4-6 weeks, please contact us when you have returned from holiday, as we are unable to reserve cats for more than a few days.

Volunteer at Cats Protection Welwyn Hatfield Branch

Without volunteers, Cats Protection Welwyn Hatfield Branch simply wouldn't exist. Our amazing, friendly volunteers are a diverse group with a shared love of cats who fit volunteering around their home lives and personal commitments.

We're often looking to welcome new volunteers to join our brilliant team. As well as meeting great people and making an incredible difference to the cats of Welwyn Hatfield, you'll enjoy practical benefits such as discounted pet insurance.

We are currently looking for:

    • fosterers (indoor and outdoor)
    • volunteers to trap stray cats and check for a microchip
    • fundraising team leader
    • fundraising volunteer
    • cat match volunteer to support the homing team

 

Would you like to become a fosterer?

Fosterers are central to our operation, and we desperately need more fosterers to look after cats whilst they await new homes. 

Indoor fosterers would need a spare, secure room away from your other pets (if any) to keep a cat for a short period of time whilst it awaits a new home. If the cat has access to the whole house, it must not be let outside.

Outdoor fosterers would need space in the garden to accommodate a pen. You may need to have a concrete base put in your garden.  However, the charity would pay for this as well as a new pen.  These are costly so a lot of thought needs to be given before making the commitment.

You need to expect that people may visit and see the cats, after having been vetted beforehand.  Being a fosterer is very rewarding and all food, litter and vets bills are paid for so all you need to supply is the TLC.
